The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced on Monday that Stage III restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) will continue in Delhi-NCR due to rising pollution levels.
These measures include a ban on non-essential construction and demolition work. The 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was 357 on Monday, up from 259 the previous day.
An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered “poor,” while an AQI between 301 and 400 is considered “very poor” and an AQI between 401 and 500 is considered “severe.” The sub-committee on GRAP noted that the increase in pollution is due to low wind speeds and unfavourable weather conditions.
Stage III restrictions are triggered when the AQI is projected to reach the “severe” category at least three days in advance. Stage IV restrictions, which include a ban on truck entry into Delhi and the implementation of odd-even vehicle rules, are triggered when the AQI reaches the “severe plus” category.
