Hyderabad, India – In a groundbreaking partnership, global leaders in glass innovation, Corning Incorporated and SGD Pharma, announced the establishment of SGD Corning Technologies Private Limited. This joint venture aims to revolutionize pharmaceutical packaging manufacturing in India by leveraging Corning’s cutting-edge Velocity® Vial technology platform.
The collaboration between SGD Pharma, a leading glass packaging company, and Corning, renowned for its proprietary glass-coating technology, brings together their respective expertise to enhance vial quality and streamline the global delivery of injectable treatments. With the increasing complexity of capacity and quality issues faced by drug makers worldwide, this joint venture will help meet the surging demand for critical medicines.
According to recent industry reports, the pharmaceutical sector is experiencing rapid growth, with global demand expected to reach $1.5 trillion by 2025. Recognizing the need for high-quality primary packaging capabilities, SGD Corning Technologies aims to support increased vaccine and critical drug production in India.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the new pharmaceutical-glass-tubing facility took place in Telangana, India, officiated by minister KT Rama Rao. Minister Rao expressed his delight at the selection of Telangana by Corning and SGD Pharma, emphasizing the crucial role of the project, which represents an investment of approximately Rs 500 crore ($70 million), in achieving India’s goal of a $250 billion ecosystem by 2030.
Olivier Rousseau, CEO of SGD Pharma, highlighted the significance of the partnership with Corning, stating, “We see an opportunity for the industry to improve drug filling quality and performance capabilities by transitioning to Corning’s coated vial technology.” This collaboration expands SGD Pharma’s portfolio of high-quality tubular glass packaging, positioning the company at the forefront of the evolving primary-packaging landscape.
SGD Corning Technologies joins a growing network of leading primary-packaging manufacturers adopting Corning’s innovative coating technology. The joint venture aims to expand the manufacturing footprint of Velocity Vials while localizing supply chains in India, facilitating easier adoption of the technology by customers.
Ron Verkleeren, senior vice president and general manager of Corning’s Life Sciences Market Access Platform, highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing pharmaceutical glass technology. “The joint venture with SGD Pharma supports our continued global expansion as we localize manufacturing for our customers,” Verkleeren stated. This collaboration not only strengthens Corning’s leadership position in the industry but also reinforces the company’s dedication to India’s high-growth market.
Manufacturing of Velocity Vials at SGD’s state-of-the-art facility in Vemula, India, is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2024, while pharmaceutical tubing production is expected to begin in 2025. With these advancements, SGD Corning Technologies Private Limited is poised to revolutionize the pharmaceutical packaging landscape, meeting the growing demand for critical medications and contributing to India’s thriving healthcare ecosystem.
