Marseille and Rennes secure victories to keep pace in Champions League pursuit

Marseille and Rennes both secured victories on Monday to maintain their pursuit of Champions League football.

Marseille won 2-1 at Montpellier to earn their fourth consecutive victory, keeping them in third place in Ligue 1. Rennes followed with a 2-1 victory at home against Nice, leaving them two points behind Marseille in fourth.

Nuno Tavares and Maxime Esteve’s own goal gave Marseille a 2-0 lead, but they had to hold on in the final minutes after Tavares was sent off and Teji Savanier scored a penalty for Montpellier.

Benjamin Bourigeaud scored the winning goal for Rennes in the 89th minute, but the team also lost star striker Martin Terrier to injury. Lille missed the chance to go sixth with a 1-1 draw at home against Reims.
